In 1888, The Football League was founded in England, becoming the first of many professional football competitions. During the twentieth century, several of the various kinds of football grew to become some of the most popular team sports in the world.

Most countries in the world have a professional football league with some clubs spending hundreds of thousands of pounds a week on players' wages. The highest paid footballer currently is Lionel Messi who earns around £60 million each year at Barcelona.

Every four years there is a football World Cup where different countries compete to be the world champions. England have only won the World Cup once in 1966 and have finished 4th twice in 1990 and 2018.
